Screenshots

Screenshots are optional, off by default on new teams, and the most sensitive thing the product can be configured to collect. This page covers exactly how they behave.

Capture interval

Captures happen at a random gap inside a range you set, redrawn every time, so the timing cannot be predicted or waited out.

2 minutes

Off for new teams

A shorter interval does not produce better information; it produces more storage and more sensitivity. Most teams that enable screenshots at all settle between five and fifteen minutes.

What each capture carries

  • The image itself, stored as a compressed JPEG plus a thumbnail.
  • The capture timestamp.
  • The activity percentage for the surrounding interval, so a quiet screen has context attached.
  • The project and task the session was attributed to.

Employee visibility

This is not configurable, and that is deliberate.

  • A notification is shown to the employee at the moment of capture.
  • The employee can open their own gallery and see every capture in full.
  • Manager access is written to the audit log, including whose gallery was opened and when.

Storage sizing

The number that surprises self-hosted buyers is disk growth. Plan for it before you enable captures across a large team.

Approximate storage, screenshots at a 5 to 10 minute interval, 8-hour days
EmployeesPer monthAt 30-day retentionAt 7-day retention
25~50 GB~50 GB steady state~12 GB steady state
50~100 GB~100 GB~24 GB
100~200 GB~200 GB~47 GB
250~500 GB~500 GB~117 GB

Retention is the lever, not compression. Halving the retention period halves the steady-state disk requirement. It is also the change your data-protection reviewer will most want to see. See data retention.

Turning them off

Screenshots can be disabled company-wide or for a specific team while time tracking continues normally. Existing captures then age out under the retention period, or can be deleted immediately by an administrator.

Frequently asked

Are screenshots on by default?

No. They are a setting on the Pro plan and on self-hosted installations, and a new team starts with them off. A large share of customers never turn them on.

Can an employee see their own screenshots?

Yes, all of them, in the same gallery their manager uses, and they are notified at the moment each one is captured.

Can we blur screenshots?

A blur setting is available so the shape of the work is visible without the content being readable. It is a good middle position for teams that need evidence of activity rather than evidence of content.
